Eating cereal topless, playing the piano nude and a stay in a psychiatric ward: The bizarre world of Lady Gaga's new Marry The Night video

By Eleanor Gower

It may be her fifth single from her latest album, but the new video release from Lady Gaga is no less spectacular than her past offerings.

At 13 minutes, 47 seconds Marry The Night is the longest video the star has ever released and features her in various states of undress.
The occasionally bizarre sequences show the star topless with her mouth overflowing with Cheerio cereal, playing the piano naked and dying her hair blue while sitting in a bath.

The 25-year-old singer also talks topless on the telephone, throws things out of an apartment window and poses in a bath only wearing a pair of high heeled silver shoes.
The star was clearly exited about tonight's first viewing of the video, which Gaga has said is autobiographical.
She tweeted to her fans earlier today: 'I am so nervous and excited to share this part of my past with you. It airs on both US coasts at 8pm on E! Get the wine.'

The singer told E! that the scenes in Marry The Night is a rendering of the day she thought her dreams were slipping away from her when was dropped from her first record label Island Def Jam.
She also reveals she was naked when she received the bad news, which accounts for the number of nude scenes in the video.
'That's probably the most honest moment in that video of everything I've ever done,' she said. 'My directorial decision was for them to just f***ing roll the cameras, because I couldn't go in and out of the moment.'

The star recalls that the day she was dropped was 'one of the worst days of my life and it happened quite quickly, but in my mind, when I think back on that period of my life, it all happened very slow.
'It is my personal way of seeing things,' she added of the video. 'If you give up after something like that, you were never destined to be an entertainer.'
The video begins with Gaga on a gurney being wheeled through a psychiatric ward by two nurses, something which said was 'comical' as well as 'dark.'

'I always believe that you walk the line of humour if you're being so incredibly serious,' she explained. 'There's something quite comical about the opening of the video, even though it's quite sinister and dark.'
Wearing little make-up and a short dark wig with her eyebrows bleached out, there is also a voiceover monologue from the singer.
In an eerie voice Gaga says: 'I don't want to see things exactly as they happened. It's just that I prefer to remember them in an artistic way. And truthfully the lie of it all is much more honest, because I invented it.

'Clinical psychology tells us arguably that trauma is the ultimate killer. Memories are not recycled like atoms and particles in quantum physics. They can be lost forever.'
Lady Gaga goes on to say, rather incongruously: 'Those nurses are wearing next season Calvin Klein and so am I. And the shoes - custom Giuseppe Zanotti.'
She adds: 'I tipped their gauze hats to the side like Parisian berets because I think it's romantic and I also believe that mint will be very big in fashion next spring.'

'The truth is, back then at the clinic they only wore those funny hats to keep the blood out of their hair,' she adds, before the shot changes to her dressed as a ballerina, one of several costume changes in the video.
'It was intensely important to me that it was not too beautiful,' Gaga told E! about the look of the video.  'It was an incredible experience. It was amazing.'
Other scenes include her dressed in black mini skirt and crop top and wearing a blonde wig while cavorting on a car bonnet, while cars burn in the distance.

There are also plenty of dance sequences in Marry The Night, with Gaga showing off her flexibility and doing the splits in a pair of ripped black tights.
The video also provided Gaga's directorial debut.
She told E! 'I know it's my directorial debut, but I've really created everything I've ever done in my career.

She added: 'I really didn't do anything differently on this video that I didn't do on the Telephone video or the Paparazzi video or the Bad Romance video.
'I hope my fans will take from this the progression that you have to trust yourself to make mistakes.'
Marry The Night follows Born This Way, Judas, The Edge of Glory and You and I as Gaga's previous singles from her number one album Born This Way.
